About us .....
Earliest records show that there has been a butchers shop on this site since the late 1800’s.
Originally owned by the Duke of Bedford estates, the shop and premises, including some premises at Paddons Row were rented by one Joseph Lovell.
On 25th March 1903, the lease was signed over to Thomas Henry Knight, the rent being £30 per year for the Brook Street premises, (House, Butchers shop & garden) and £12 per year for the Paddon Row premises, (a three stall Stable, loft and Trap House) .
The lease was then sold to 2 brothers called Reddicliffe who farmed at Peter Tavy.
John Palmer had been apprenticed to Joseph Lovell and had started his own butchery business in Brook Street during this time. Records show that John Palmer then purchased the premises at 50, Brook Street on 1st July, 1912 along with 3 cottages in Parkwood Road for the princely sum of £1152-00.
His son, Thomas Henry Eastcott Palmer eventually joined his father, and a slaughterhouse in Market Road became part of the business, with his other son Frank looking after the farming side.
In 1963, Archer Bird took over the management of the business, with his son Roger learning the trade. In 1975, they purchased the business, and eventually Brian, Roger’s brother also came into the business in 1985, after successfully running a butchers shop in Banbury.
In March 2001, Brian retired, and Duncan, Roger's son joined the business as a co-director.
Palmers is a long well established family business, with all the experience and knowledge of the trade which comes with the years.
